Got a question? Here are some of our most commonly asked questions and their answers.
WHAT DOES THE LOCATION 'UK WIDE' MEAN IN THE PICK A PROGRAMME SECTION?
BT has offices up and down the country, and many of our graduate managers are based in various locations across the UK.
When you register your details you’ll be able to choose which areas of the country you’re happy to live and work in. You can pick as many as you like, but only the areas you’re definitely happy to be based in.
The more flexible you are, the more opportunities we’ll match you to. But we do recognise that some people have put down roots and only want to be considered for a certain region.
CAN I WORK TOWARDS PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS?
There are often opportunities to get extra qualifications on our graduate programme. Please read the role overview pages in the programme section for more information.
If there’s not a qualification as part of your programme but you feel it is important to your career at BT, let us know once you’ve joined. We’ll look into the business case for us investing in the extra training.
As you talk to people in BT you’ll hear many of them have completed a range of qualifications here.
CAN I MOVE AROUND WITHIN BT?
The amount you move around when you join us will depend on which area of the business you work in. Some areas offer structured rotations, working in different teams every 6-9 months. You’ll find out more about this if you apply and spend some time with us at an Assessment Centre.
If you join more of a specialist programme (like in our technology stream), it’s much more likely you’ll spend time in your programme role really mastering it and learning your trade to become an expert. So you’ll have the opportunity to take on real responsibility quickly.
Longer term, there are so many opportunities at BT and your career is in your hands – you can use the Academy and your skills in navigating the business and networking to achieve your full potential, and the career you want.
WILL I BE ABLE TO WORK IN DIFFERENT PLACES?
We’d recommend applying to the location you’re motivated and committed to working in. We’re a huge international organisation and have loads of opportunities, but we’ll expect you to commit to completing your programme and begin adding value to your team before looking at other roles.
Something that we often hear is quite special to BT is that the vast majority of our recruitment is internal. We make sure we give opportunities to our own people and hire or promote from within as much as possible. Once you’re here you’ll be able to see all our opportunities and after you’ve finished the programme you’ll have every chance to explore all the options we’ve got available.
HOW IS MY PROGRESS MONITORED?
From the start, your manager will measure your performance against your personal and team objectives. You'll have regular performance reviews with your line manager to get feedback, talk about how you're doing and for you to show how you're meeting those objectives.
CAN APPLICANTS FROM OUTSIDE THE EUROPEAN ECONOMIC AREA APPLY?
Ideally you will already have the right to work in the UK, as do the majority of our applicants.
We sometimes offer sponsorship opportunities at our discretion but the demand and competition for sponsorship is extremely high. Consequently, we have to be selective and can only offer it to the very best candidates, subject to business need.
For more information on the right to work in the UK, go to the government website: www.gov.uk/legal-right-to-work-uk
IS THERE AN AGE LIMIT FOR APPLICANTS, OR A TIME LIMIT BETWEEN GRADUATING AND APPLYING FOR A GRADUATE JOB?
No. We're proud to be an equal opportunities employer. We don't discriminate on any basis, including age.
DO YOU SPONSOR UNDERGRADUATES?
As part of our talent programme offering we don’t sponsor undergraduates, or pay bursaries. But we do offer paid internships to undergraduates (have a look at the Internship section of the website).
WHAT IS THE CLOSING DATE FOR APPLICATIONS?
Check the website for details on the closing date (it might be different depending on the stream you’re applying for).
I ALREADY WORK FOR BT. DO I NEED THE SAME QUALIFICATIONS AND DO I HAVE TO APPLY ONLINE?
Yes, our application procedure is exactly the same for internal and external applicants.
I'VE NOT BEEN SUCCESSFUL AT ONE OF THE RECRUITMENT PROCESS STAGES - CAN I RE-APPLY?
No, sorry. You can only submit one application for each campaign year.
WILL I GET FEEDBACK ON MY APPLICATION?
Yes, your experience is really important to us. You’ll get feedback at each stage of the process regardless of whether you’re successful. We’ll provide this to you as a priority, you don’t need to ask for it.
DOES BT REIMBURSE TRAVEL EXPENSES FOR ASSESSMENT CENTRES?
Yes. We’ll tell you more about our travel policies if you're successful and invited to an assessment centre.
I CAN'T ACCESS THE ONLINE APPLICATION FORM.
If you’re having trouble with the online application, email us at firstname.lastname@example.org with the subject line “Issue with applying online”
HOW CAN I CHECK ON THE PROGRESS OF MY APPLICATION?
Just log on to your application using your username and password – you’ll be able to check its progress. We’ll email at every stage of the hiring process and keep you updated regularly. We’ll always tell you whether it’s a yes or a no.
HOW WILL I KNOW YOU'VE GOT MY APPLICATION?
We'll email you within 24 hours to confirm we've got it.
